'Oski' alerted us the trailer for Warner Bros.' Starsky & Hutch was screened online for a survey. Here's the scoop!

I recieved an email for a survey today. The survey was about upcomming movies like 50 First Dates and Starsky and Hutch. Part of the survey was watching a trailer for Starsky and Hutch and then answering some questions based on what I saw.

The trailer showed various funny scenes, including the party infiltration scene that was talked about in an article here at coming soon. We see that Starsky (Stiller) is a 2nd generation cop, behind his mother who apparently died in the line of duty. The trailer cuts between scenes by showing a red screen and then the racing stripe from the Ford Torino flashing by.

I don't want to give away too much, but this movie is looking great. Look for a great cameo from Will Ferrell as an inmate.

Starsky & Hutch, starring Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Snoop Dogg, Vince Vaughn, Carmen Electra and Juliette Lewis, is aiming for a March 5 release.

Just thought I should let you guys know that the new Revolutions poster just came in to my theater. It looks just like the Reloaded holograms ones only it says "Everything That Has A Beginning Has An End." It features the date on the bottom. 11-05.

Also of note is the release of The Matrix Reloaded in IMAX. You may be interested to know that the movie is uncut. Normally an IMAX film has a 2 hour limit due to the size of the film reels. However, the Wachowski's paid to have a bigger reel made so the film wouldn't have to be cut.

The December, 2003 issue of Empire magazine has a first look at director Terry Gilliam's The Brothers Grimm, starring Matt Damon, Heath Ledger, Jonathan Pryce and Monica Bellucci. Included are quotes from Damon, Gilliam and production designer Guy Hendrix Dyas, as well as several spoilers.

In the fantasy/adventure/comedy, filmed at Barrandov Studios on the outskirts of Prague, Damon & Ledger star as the legendary German fairy tale authors, Will and Jacob Grimm, reinvented as 17th century con men who find themselves facing the perils of a real enchanted forest.

Gilliam took a break after his last production, The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, fell apart. "After the whole disaster with Don Quixote, I was really quite depressed. When this came along, it seemed to have all the right elements - it had fantasy, imagination, it was intelligent. And it had the money," laughs the one-time Python, oft-visionary director. He tells the magazine that "it was strange getting back in the saddle. In the first week I was out of practice and making stupid mistakes. But we seem to be getting there now."

Joining Gilliam on the set was X2: X-Men United production designer Guy Hendrix Dyas. "Guy's work on this is amazing," added Gilliam. Dyas has had the chance to build and entire fairy tale village on the backlot, ruined castles, and not one but two full sized forests - one studio-based, one outside.

"We tried to find a real forest," Dyas explains. "Terry and I spent nearly a month scouting out here trying to find one. But then we realized that to control that environment we'd have to build it on set. So Terry can shoot day or night - do whatever he wants to do."

The magazine visited the set where Matt Damon was licking a toad. Repeatedly, take after take after vomit-inducing take. "It was okay until the lady doctor told me to take these three infection pills afterwards," laughs Damon. "Then again, for the money they're paying me, I can't complain." Also, Gilliam was admiring one of his forests as it's burnt to the ground by an army of Napoleonic soldiers. "Now that's a fire!" he shouts, an impish grin on his face.

The story centers on a young married couple from two divorced families. On Christmas Day, they must hit all four holiday celebrations.

Moviehole tells us they've got new cast and story details on Anaconda 2: The Black Orchid, the sequel to the 1997 film which starred Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube, Jon Voight and Owen Wilson.

Moviehole can exclusively reveal two cast members and the storyline being used for the upcoming "Anaconda 2", which starts filming in Fiji this August.

"Anaconda 2" is scheduled to sliver into production in Fiji at the beginning of August and two cast members are confirmed. They're Nicholas Hope, the Australian actor who gained notoriety after starring in the controversial "Bad Boy Bubby" a couple of years back. He more recently played Old Man Smithers in "Scooby Doo". And Peter Curtin, also based in Australia, whose credits include "Darkness Falls" and "Til Human Voices Wake Us".

We also spoke to one of the writers who shed some light on the plot.

"The story is essentially a good old fashioned jungle adventure about a scientific expedition (the charismatic but unethical scientist, his greedy and often cowardly business partner, the good and highly ethical girl scientist named 'Sam,' and the handsome but crusty and always brave jungle guide, her unlikely romantic interest, who apparently now also has a pet monkey... and why not?) that travels to the darkest jungles of Borneo (although they are now filming in Fiji) in pursuit of a rare black orchid that blooms only once every seven years and just might, maybe, could hold the secret to immortality (or at least living a lot longer) and is therefore worth more than Viagra to the pharmaceutical company sponsoring the expedition. When the snakes aren't present, human greed, ambition and murder hold the stage. And when the snakes start showing up, well, what the black orchid is really good for, it would seem, is turning big snakes into really, really huge snakes since, as we all know, Anacondas never stop growing, and the longer they live, the bigger they get and the more people they can eat in this sort of old fashioned jungle adventure."

Summary:
School Of Rock is a fun film. With a good performance by Jack Black and a great soundtrack, it�s worth checking out. However, it�s not necessarily for kiddies as the commercials may suggest.

Story:
Dewey Finn has a dream to create a classic rock band. While he only cares about the music, he�d really like to win a local radio contest called The Battle Of The Bands. Unfortunately, everything is against him. His current band just kicked him out, he has no social life, no responsibility, no job, and his roommate�s girlfriend wants him kicked out of their apartment. In short, things look bleak thanks to �The Man�.

Desperate for money, he poses as his roommate in order to get a job as a substitute teacher at an exclusive private elementary school. Dewey fits right in as Principal Mullins chalks up his strange ways to eccentric genius. Now faced with a class full of brilliant children, Dewey must find a way to pass the next three weeks. When he discovers that the students have musical talents, he gets a bright idea. He�ll secretly turn the kids into a rock band to win the Battle Of The Bands.

Dewey assigns the kids to positions in the band according to their talents. He appoints some kids as roadies, security, stylists, and groupies. He begins to brainwash them by teaching them music appreciation with Jimi Hendrix, Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd, and more. The kids end up being a quite talented band, but what will happen when the school and parents find out what they�ve been doing instead of math, science, and English?

School Of Rock is rated PG-13 for some rude humor and drug references.

What Worked:
Your enjoyment of School Of Rock will heavily depend on your feelings towards Jack Black. If you like him, then you�ll love this film. He�s on the screen almost the entire time and he�s in full spaz mode constantly. There were many times I thought the guy was going to spontaneously combust. If Jack Black�s style of humor isn�t your cup of tea, then you�ll want to play hooky when it comes to School Of Rock. Fortunately, I was in the mood for his psychotic behavior so I got a kick out of the movie.

School Of Rock was a fun film for me. I�m a fan of classic rock, so seeing Jack Black instruct young children in the ways of Hendrix was a treat. Rock fans will enjoy hearing Black teach kids the tunes to songs from AC/DC, Zepplin, and others. With that type of music as the central theme of the movie, the soundtrack ended up being really good as well. It�s filled with all sorts of good tunes from the days of yore. The whole classic rock music scene is also ripe for all sorts of jokes that Black takes full advantage of. Groupies, punks, glam rockers, and others are all fair game.

But besides classic rock, the new music the kids make is good as well. The creators made the right choice in casting children who could really play instruments. When you see one kid drumming or another playing a guitar or a girl playing base, there�s no doubt in your mind that they could do it. That makes the songs they play during the Battle Of The Bands all the more impressive. For 10 year olds they put on quite a performance.

Somehow Jack Black ends up being a lovable loser. At first there�s not much to like about his character. He�s lazy, a freeloader, rude, stupid, and a liar. However, somehow Black is able to still make us like him despite it all. What helps is his interaction with the kids. He takes each one of them and builds them up so that they are more confident than they were before. That goes a long way towards getting audiences to look past his shortcomings. Black�s interaction with the children seems natural and helps make the movie work. He�s also great with Joan Cusack as the highly-strung principal.

With a great soundtrack, a funny plot, and a good cast, School Of Rock is a really fun movie.

What Didn�t Work:
My main gripe about this movie is the PG-13 rating. I think the creators of School Of Rock could have had a really great family movie if they had been willing to cut a few jokes involving kids cussing. (Like we haven�t seen this before?) Without that this would have been a tame but funny comedy that you wouldn�t mind taking your kids to. I think the PG-13 rating is appropriate (because you don�t want younger kids necessarily imitating the kids in the movie), but I think it�s ultimately going to limit the audience for this film.

School Of Rock also takes a while to get rolling. It starts out with a strong opening of Dewey enthusiastically playing with his band for an uninterested crowd. It then slows down dramatically and doesn�t pick up again until the kids start rocking. But if you stick with it through the big finish you�ll be glad you did.

The Bottom Line:
Overall School Of Rock is a fun movie that�s worth checking out. However, it isn�t necessarily a family movie you want to drag the kiddies to.

Simon Cowell Signs 3-Year American Idol

American Idol's acerbic Simon Cowell has signed a three-year deal with Fox Broadcasting Company to remain on the talent competition show as well as develop new projects for the network.

Under the pact, Cowell will return as a judge on the next three installments of "Idol." He is said to pocket about $150,000 per episode -- a significant bump from his salary for the second installment of "Idol" -- for the upcoming third edition of "Idol," which will bow in January.

As part of the first-look deal with Cowell's new production banner, Simcow Ltd., the network has given him a blind series commitment. No concept has been determined for the project, but Cowell said he will probably focus initially on unscripted projects.

Van Sant's Elephant

Gus Van Sant won the Cannes film festival's coveted Palme d'Or award Sunday for Elephant, a film that tracks the lives of actual U.S. students to see how they cope with shootings and violence at school. Van Sant previously directed such films as Good Will Hunting and To Die For. He also received the award for best direction at the Festival.

Elephant uses non-actor children from Van Sant's home town of Portland, Oregon, and improvised lines to paint an impressionistic picture of everyday high school life that turns to tragedy when two students go on a shooting spree.

Another film touted as a top winner was French-Canadian The Barbarian Invasions, which ended up winning best screenplay and best actress for Marie-Josee Croze, who plays a drug addict who supplies the dying hero with heroin to ease his pain.

Two awards also went to Turkish film Uzak (Distant), a moving study of how a man's home life is upset when a jobless cousin moves in. Director Nuri Bilge Ceylan won the runner-up Grand Prix and amateur players Muzaffer Ozdemir and Mehmet Emin Toprak jointly won best actor, an honor that goes posthumously to Toprak, Ceylan's cousin, after he died in a car accident the day after learning Uzak was shortlisted for Cannes.

Iranian director Samira Makhmalbaf, just 23, received her second Jury Award in three years for Five in the Afternoon, her portrayal of life in Afghanistan since the Taliban fell.
